The institute of astrophysics hosts a theoretical physics group whose research topics range from gravitational wave signals emitted during compact object coalescence (neutron stars and black holes in particular) to early universe cosmology. The latter theme requires understanding the physical mechanisms at play just after the Big-Bang (and even before in some models!), from which large scale structures originated.
