Hydrogenated amorphous carbons (a–C:H) are a major component of the carbonaceous solids present in the interstellar medium. The production and existence of these grains is connected in particular with the balance between their photolysis, radiolysis, and hydrogenation. During grain processing, H2 and other small organic molecules, radicals, and fragments are released into the gas phase. We perform photolytic experiments on laboratory produced interstellar a–C:H analogues to monitor and quantify the release of species and compare to relevant observations in the diffuse ISM and PDRs. |

Formation of massive star clusters in mergers | |
Super star clusters (SSCs), likely the progenitors of globular clusters, are one of the most extreme forms of star formation. Understanding how they form is an observational challenge. We present VLT near-IR H2 spectro-imaging and ALMA observations at 50 pc resolution of the Antennae galaxies, the closest example of a starburst/major-merger. We found that in the interacting region, H2 lines are powered by shocks and trace the dissipation of the gas kinetic energy. CO traces the distribution of the molecular gas mass. These molecular lines are complementary, providing the needed information to characterize the dynamical state of the molecular gas. We focus on a compact, bright H2 source, associated with cold molecular gas and dust continuum emission, located where the velocity gradient in the interaction region is observed to be the largest. The characteristics of this source suggest that we are witnessing the formation, initiated by turbulent dissipation, of a cloud massive enough to form a SSC within 1 Myr. Finally, we will discuss our plans to explore the formation of SSCs combining ALMA data with JWST observations of H2 emission. |

I will discuss out-of equilibrium effects on the ortho-para ratio of H2 in shocks and in 2D simulations of decaying turbulence. Some of these aspects were already discussed in Wilgenbus et al. (2008). I now have simulations of decaying 2D turbulence where 7 levels of H2 are followed time dependently: I propose to investigate how these dynamics affect the ortho/para ratio. |

The role of super-excited states in the molecular dynamics will be illustrated, as well as the significant link with the photoionization and the photodissociation of H2. |

Consequences of out-of-equilibrium H2 on the chemistry of diffuse molecular clouds | |
H2 is the most abundant molecule in the ISM. Its formation precedes the formation of other molecules and its evolution timescale is probably the longest one in the ISM. As a consequence, it can be transported by the turbulence toward low density and warm regions where it can survive due to the shielding provided by the multiphase structure of the ISM. There, the warm H2 can boost the abundances of molecules with high energy barriers, such as CH+. We will present results for a MHD multiphase simulation of a turbulent molecular cloud that includes the formation and destruction of H2, and which has been post-processed to show the influence of the out-of-equilibrium H2 on the abundance of the puzzling molecule CH+. |
