Large observational programmes

H.H. HeyerA view of the VLT. Credits: ESO/H.H. Hever IAP researchers are heavy users of astronomical observatories, on the ground and in space. On the ground, they observe at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) with its “Very Large Telescope” (VLT), as well as the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimiter Array (ALMA) in Chile, the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) in Hawaii, the Institut de Radio Astronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) radio-telescopes in France and Spain, the Observatoire de Haute-Provence in France (OHP). The IAP researchers also observe, remotely, with space telescopes such as Hubble, XMM/Newton, James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and Euclid - whose international consortium is led by an IAP researcher, with the institute playing a major role in the ground segment of the satellite and the processing of images from the VIS instrument.

When large samples of celestial objects are required, or many hours or nights of observations on one or a few objects, international collaborations define the targeted observations then analyze and interpret them. The same region of the sky can also be observed in different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum in order to improve the physical understanding of the phenomena observed. IAP researchers are key members, and are sometimes the principal investigators of these various types of large observational programs. These programs require long observations, representing a notable fraction of the observation time available at these observatories.
