« The Universe seen through ultrahigh energy cosmic ray spectacles »

High energy cosmic rays still remain a great puzzle to the scientific community. Their acceleration mechanism, as well as their progenitors and the magnetized medium they travel through before reaching the Earth are not yet understood, despite decades of experimental and theoretical research. We review the important ingredients that affect the propagation of high energy cosmic rays and discuss the possibility for various astrophysical objects to accelerate particles to the highest energies. Recently, the Pierre Auger Observatory reported a highly significant correlation between active galactic nuclei and the arrival direction of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays. We will present different interpretations of these results, using simple energetic arguments, and in the light of analytical and numerical propagation works.
