« Quasi-local black hole horizons in Numerical Relativity: a quasi-equilibrium case »

We discuss some aspects of the recently introduced quasi-local black hole horizon formalisms, focusing on their application to the numerical construction of spacetimes in a 3+1 approach. More especifically, we extract from these quasi-local frameworks a set of boundary conditions to be imposed on a sphere representing a space-like slice of the black hole horizon, when solving Einstein equations by means of an excision approach.
The strategy is illustrated by the construction of initial data for spacetimes containing a black hole, in such a way that the black hole horizon is initially in instantaneous quasi-equilibrium (black hole horizon quasi-equilibrium is characterized by the Isolated Horizon notion). Conformal thin sandwich equations are employed, complemented with the here-discussed isolated horizon boundary conditions to define an elliptic system.
Together with the construction of astrophysically realistic initial data for black hole spacetimes, this quasi-equilibrium scenario represents a warming-up exercise for the implementation of the full evolution of dynamical horizons, since some well-posedness issues already show up in the equilibrium case.
