« Effective field theory and the initial conditions for inflation »

Jan Peter Van Der Schaar

In this talk I will discuss recent results on the vacuum choice ambiguity in inflationary spacetimes using a coherent effective field theory approach. In this framework the choice of initial conditions is encoded in a boundary action at some fixed, but completely arbitrary, early time. Using standard Wilsonian RG-flow methods we deduce the generic leading order irrelevant operators, encoding unknown high energy physics, and calculate their effect on the spectrum of primordial fluctuations. We conclude that the lowest order high energy corrections are generically linear in the Hubble parameter and the length scale of new physics, optimistically allowing for detection in future CMB observations.
