The development of hydrodynamical instabilities during the first second after core bounce is a key ingredient in the explosion mechanism of massive stars.
It affects the birth properties of neutron stars and black holes and generates specific signatures in gravitational waves and neutrinos.
Guided by experimental results in a shallow water analogue, we use a perturbative study in the adiabatic approximation to reach a physical understanding of the instability mechanism as an acoustic oscillator forced by the advection of entropy and vorticity.
Analytical estimates of SASI growth rate and oscillation frequency are obtained and the destabilizing effect of rotation is clarified.
Calculating the effects of viscosity and thermal diffusivity reveals the relative roles of vorticity and entropy, and the sensitivity of SASI to numerical viscosity and turbulence.
