« Extracting energy from black holes in force-free environments: generalizations of the Blandford-Znajek process »

The Blandford-Znajek process, one of the most promising models for powering the relativistic jets from black holes, was initially introduced as a mechanism in which the magnetic fields extract energy from a rotating black hole. In order to fully understand this process, we study numerically the dynamics of force-free electromagnetic fields on spinning and/or boosted black holes. In addition, we also consider regular spacetimes with an ergosphere, which are generated by rapidly rotating 'dark' stars. Our results indicate that: i) a force-free environment can always extract the available kinetic energy of a black hole, and (ii) the Blandford-Znajek mechanism is not directly related to the black hole horizon, but to the presence of an ergosphere.
