« GRAVITY and EHT: probing the suburb of supermassive black holes »

GRAVITY combines the infrared light from the four 8-meter telescopes
at Paranal in Chile. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a network of
millimeter antennas located all around the world. These two instruments
allow to reach the exquisite astrometric/resolution level of 10s of microarcseconds, i.e. a fraction of the angular size of the black hole shadows of Sgr A* at the center of the Galaxy, and M87* at the center of M87.
I will discuss the recent breakthroughs of these two instruments,
as well as the kind of science that can be achieved in the near
or more distant future.
