« Manyfield inflation »

The inflationary paradigm provides a rather simple explanation of the cosmological origin of structure, but the micro-physics governing this epoch remains elusive. For example, it is not known whether the dynamics of the early universe involved just a single or multiple fields. Part of this problem stems from the computational complexity of extracting predictions from general multiple-field models, and most progress in the past has involved models with only very few fields, or very simple potentials. In this talk, I will discuss two new, independent methods that enables the study of inflationary models with many fields subject to general, randomly generated interaction terms. I will discuss novel features of the generation of cosmological observables using explicit examples of manyfield inflation involving up to 100 fields, and I will compare the predictions of the two methods. In particular, I will discuss the generation of non-Gaussianity in these manyfield models, and critically assess the prospects of the next generation of cosmological experiments.
