« Nonlinear partially massless gravity: no-go results for one and multiple fields »

Partially massless (PM) gravity is a theory in which a massive graviton on de Sitter spacetime enjoys a gauge symmetry that ties the value of the curvature of the universe to be of the order of the graviton mass, thus offering a gripping new perspective on the cosmological constant problem. This theory is however only known at the linear level, and there has been much research recently on the question of whether nonlinear completions exist. I provide a very general no-go result for such nonlinear models: it is shown that the PM symmetry admits a unique extension which nonetheless cannot be realized by any two-derivative action. I then consider the possibility of constructing a Yang-Mills type PM theory, motivated by some tantalizing analogies between the photon and the PM graviton. However, some general arguments are given that non-Abelian interactions among “colored” PM gravitons in fact do not exist.
