« Singularity cloaking in higher-derivative tensor-scalar theories »

In this talk, we shall describe how higher-derivative terms in the gravity-scalar sector can lead to various resolutions of singular geometries. Focussing first on higher-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity, we review how the higher-dimensional term: either leads to a regular background for maximally symmetric horizons; or cloaks the curvature singularity for horizons which are Einstein spaces. Combining this with dimensional reduction techniques, we then extend this discussion to the scalar-tensor sector in the context of recently popularised theories modifying gravity (Galileons). Background curvature singularities which cannot be resolved by dimensional uplifting are cloaked by the higher-derivative terms.
