« Peering into the dark side through the universe’s magnifying glass » |

The formation, evolution and properties of the galaxies are inextricably connected to the dark matter halos in which they reside. Therefore it is imperative to study the properties of galaxies within the framework of their dark matter environment and understand how the two connect to each other. In this edition of YmCa we will look into what this so called galaxy-halo connection is, how it can be studied, and what can it tell us about the life of galaxies. One of the major issues in these studies is probing the properties of dark matter halos, and most of the studies rely on cosmological simulations. We will have a closer look in a direct method to probe halo properties using weak gravitational lensing. In particular, in the weak lensing effect of magnification the sizes and fluxes of distant galaxies are modified by the intervening dark matter. By measuring these changes, magnification can be used to directly probe the halo properties and relate them to the properties of the galaxies. We will present how these magnification measurements can be done and to what extent they can inform us on the galaxy-halo connection. |
