In this YMCA, I will relate the question of linear stability in gravitational collisionless systems to well-known types of instabilities in fluid systems, in order to show why it is necessary to use more complicated mathematical tools to treat stability in gravitational N-body systems. I will in particular focus on destabilizing processes due to differential rotation in disks, and the radial orbit instability in spherical systems.
