« Chemical potential of the Universe and how to measure it » |
Dmitry Novikov |
Deviations of the CMB frequency spectrum from the blackbody shape represent a completely new channel of information about the fundamental physical processes in the early Universe, sometimes inaccessible to other observations.
The epoch of so-called chemical potential type µ distortions takes place in the interval of redshift between z ~ 2 × 10^6 and z ~ 10^5. The detection of such distortions can provide essential information about the mechanisms of a possible energy injection into the plasma during this period of time. The task of measuring µ distortions is very challenging and complicated by the presence of cosmic and instrumental foregrounds. These foregrounds are extremely difficult to model and predict with the accuracy needed to measure small variations in the CMB frequency spectrum. We propose an approach that will help us to separate the mu-signal from foregrounds with poorly defined and poorly modelled spectral shapes. |
