Dwarf galaxies provide a unique opportunity to study the evolution of the nearby Universe. These "test particles" play a particularly important role in the study of the Milky Way, the Andromeda Nebula, and the Local Group as a whole. An analysis of the Solar running apex relative to the Milky Way satellites has revealed an unexpected behavior of the dipole term in the distribution of radial velocities as a function of galactocentric distance. The most probable explanation for the abnormal high collective motion of close satellites at distances below 100 kpc is the perturbation caused by the first passage of the massive Large Magellanic Cloud around our Galaxy. Careful accounting of the satellite motions allows us to estimate the virial masses of the Milky Way and the Andromeda Nebula on a scale of 50 to 400 kpc. The model of the ifall into the Local Group gives an estimate of the total mass of the system, consistent with the individual mass estimates of its two main members. |
