Galaxy cluster outskirts are critical for quantifying galaxy evolution. This is because throughout their accretion onto a cluster, galaxies experience filament and group environments that can initiate galaxy transformations long before they fall into the cluster (‘pre-processing’). If this model is right, there are clear predictions that we will test by direct comparison with observations the community has been working towards for the past decade. In the next few years, we will see a number of surveys launch that will create an opportunity to connect the detailed spectroscopic information from cluster outskirts (e.g. WEAVE Wide-Field Cluster Survey, 4MOST CHANCES) to the expansive large-scale structure information from all-sky surveys (e.g. Euclid Survey, 4MOST 4HS). However, capturing these very diverse environments is challenging and requires careful preparation. We have made substantial progress in examining the cluster-filament interface to capture filaments and groups, trace the flow of gas into and along filaments, and conduct a census of galaxy environments in the infall regions of simulated clusters to compare observed signatures to. We further acted out several scenarios for new cluster programmes, including reliability tests of filament finding in redshift space and producing probability “truth tables” so we may understand how many galaxies we can expect to correctly map to their host environment in the vicinity of a cluster. Equally, we are investigating choices to best capture the filamentary environment from wide surveys and how this maps across to smaller scales. |
