« The nature and assembly channels of the densest isolated galaxy systems »

Most galaxies in the Universe live in groups of one to 100 times the virial mass of our Milky Way. Among these, the most spectacular are systems of 4 or more galaxies of comparable luminosity that appear compact and isolated on the sky. If these systems are as dense in 3D as they appear on the sky, they would constitute ideal sites of galaxy interactions and merging. I will discuss work spanning 35 years to address the following questions: 1) What is the nature of compact groups: what fraction are physical dense systems of at least 4 galaxies, and how far along the line of sight extend the spectroscopically confirmed members? 2) What are the scaling relations of compact groups? 3) How do compact groups evolve: do they necessarily pass through a fossil group stage with one very dominant galaxy? 4) How do compact groups form: how frequent are the different possible assembly channels? I will show that the nature of compact groups and their assembly channels depend on cosmological parameters.
