« Spinning binaries in scalar-tensor gravity » |
Leong Khim Wong |
Light scalar fields that couple both conformally and disformally to matter are a common feature in many alternative theories of gravity, such as in (beyond) Horndeski and general DHOST theories, in the decoupling limit of massive gravity, and in various brane-world scenarios. Exploring how well these kinds of interactions are constrained by observational data therefore provides us with valuable information that can help distinguish between viable and unviable models. In this talk, I will describe recent advancements in the modelling of binary systems in scalar-tensor theories; focusing, in particular, on the inclusion of linear-in-spin effects. We will discuss how one can formulate a self-consistent description of spinning point particles in scalar-tensor gravity, and will then use the predictions of this model to establish new constraints on the disformal coupling. As we shall see, experiments that are particularly sensitive to spin-orbit effects offer a promising and qualitatively new window into the disformally coupled dark sector. |
