Binary black holes (BBHs) residing in dense stellar environments lead dynamically complex lives as they undergo strong interactions with other black holes (BHs). These interactions can excite the eccentricity of the BBHs and even lead to their merger. In contrast, isolated field binaries struggle to produce BBHs with significant eccentricity during the merger process. Factors such as tides, mass transfer episodes, and common envelope events, typically circularize the orbit of a binary star before it evolves into a BBH. Consequently, eccentric mergers are commonly associated with BBHs formed in dynamically active environments. If detected in the waveform of a merger, eccentricity can serve as a tool to infer the dynamical origin of a BBH.
In my presentation, I will explore how dynamical interactions within star clusters might serve as a valid pathway for producing eccentric BBH mergers. I will present how these interactions impact the population of BH mergers in young, globular, and nuclear star clusters. I will investigate the role of these interactions in the formation of eccentric BBH mergers. The hosting environment significantly influences the properties of the BBH merger population and also plays a crucial role in dynamical ejections. Lastly, I will discuss how the dynamics of the cluster can leave distinctive signatures on the merger properties. Not only eccentricity, but also total masses and spins of the BH mergers, can be employed as indicators of their dynamical formation. |
