ISABEL JUANPERA* & FRANÇOIS TUSQUES
"FLOR DE TANGO" is a short anthology of some of the best tangos chosen from among the several thousand extant songs, all originating from the one and only birthplace of the tango: Argentina (Buenos Aires to be more precise). This production is also the dramatization of a series of portraits illustrating mythical places and universal situations.
If as Discépolo rightly said, the tango is "a sad song to be danced to", it is above all "the" song of Buenos Aires.
Just as in the case of the "blues" and the "fado", the music of tango songs conveys the same feelings as the lyrics: yearning, frustration and human suffering born from impossible dreams, thwarted passion and non-retrievable losses. The texts are often by greats poets, some of whom we may never have heard of, such as Homero Manzi, Enrique Cadimo and Cátulo Castillo, others as famous as Borges, Cortazar or Sábato. For tango music expresses the metaphysical ill-being common to everyone of us, when it gets satirical, its humour can strike you as hard as a slap across your face. A Buenos Aires inhabitant or "portégno" never dances to, sings along with, or listens to tango just for fun, but rather to meditate on his own lot or entertain dark thoughts on the human condition in general.
The aim of "Flor de Tango" is to share with you and convey to you, across the language barrier, the depth and beauty of that unique type of music and to move and surprise you through no other means than the power of words, music and the human voice.
