At its meeting of January 31, 2022, the Board of Directors of the Société Française de Physique (SFP), awards the Paul Langevin Prize 2021 to Cédric Deffayet.

This prize recognizes the works on cosmology and relativistic field theories of Cédric Deffayet, CNRS senior researcher at the IAP (Sorbonne University/CNRS). His most important results address the cosmology of brane universes, the study of theories that modify long-distance gravitation, theories of “massive” gravity, the generalization of general relativity to actions with several derivatives. In particular, he studied the consequences of these theories on primordial cosmology and the acceleration of the Universe. Through their strong impact, his contributions launched a theme around the idea of modification of the gravitational interaction at cosmological distances, in connection with the issue of dark energy. Cédric Deffayet is also involved in the collective activities of the scientific community, as well as in teaching and outreach activities.
