« The past and present of protoplanetary disks »

Circumstellar disks play a fundamental role in the process of star and planet formation. They are detected and studied in a growing number of systems in star-forming regions, around stars of all masses, from brown dwarfs to 8 solar mass objects. The results reveal huge variations in disk properties, which so far do not have a convincing explanation. In this talk I will discuss the current status of disk observations and I will argue that the key factors which control disk properties and evolution over the entire disk lifetime are to be found in the early phases of the star and disk formation from a collapsing molecular core.
