«  Bringing it down to Earth: Quantum gravity from black holes to the lab »

Francesca Vidotto

Can we witness quantum gravity in the lab? New proposed experiments indicate the possibility of detecting an effect of the quantum superposition of two distinct configurations of the gravitational field. An application inspired by these set-ups is a device for the direct detection of particles interacting only gravitationally, i.e. a dark matter candidate. Among the different dark matter candidates, indeed, one possible component may come from quantum gravity. A tantalizing possibility is that Planckian particle-like objects could be produced as semi-stable remnants of black hole evaporation. Quantum gravity is pivotal in their production process, stabilizing the resulting object and making it extremely long-living. These Planckian remnants could complement the existing cosmological scenarios with primordial black holes. The search for these objects connects table-top experiments with the search for quantum gravity in the sky through black holes and cosmological models allowing for their presence, and hopefully brings quantum gravity phenomenology at reach!
