« And what about magnetic fields? »

Magnetic fields are known to permeate the entire Universe. Yet whilst there exists little doubt that they shape star formation on small scales, and that magnetic energy is observed to be roughly in equipartition with turbulent and thermal energy on galaxy scales, relatively little effort has been devoted to understand how galactic magnetic fields emerge in an explicit cosmological context. In this talk, I will report on recent work we have carried out to address the issue. More specifically, I will discuss how we have, for the first time, captured a small-scale turbulent galactic dynamo at play in a cosmological zoom simulation, that is capable of amplifying a tiny seed magnetic field to the level observed in local and high redshift galaxies.
