« Following the energy trail in the environment of high-redshift starburst galaxies: large turbulent gas reservoirs unveiled with ALMA »

The growth of galaxies in the early universe is largely governed by the conversion of massive gas reservoirs into stars. The gas feeding of star-forming galaxies generates intense turbulence that acts as an energy buffer over timescales that are essentially unknown. The recent discovery of very bright gravitationally lensed sub-millimeter galaxies at high redshift, combined with the outstanding sensitivity and resolution power of ALMA, has opened the possibility of absorption spectroscopy against the dust thermal emission of these galaxies. The unique chemical and spectroscopic properties of the CH+ cation make it a robust tracer of turbulent dissipation. We will show how the unexpected detections of the CH+(1-0) line in absorption and in emission towards starburst galaxies at redshift 2 to 3 unveil large turbulent reservoirs of diffuse molecular gas around these galaxies and why galactic feedback, mediated jointly by turbulence and gravity, extends the starburst phase instead of quenching it.
