"Bigger, closer, brighter: multimessenger astronomy with pulsar timing arrays"

In the next decade the detection of gravitational waves (GW) will (hopefully) be a reality, opening a completely new window on the Universe. Joint GW and electromagnetic (EM) observations promise to open new avenues in astrophysics, cosmology and cosmography. Traditionally, most of the attention has been focused on LISA or advanced ground based interferometer sources (massive black hole binaries, GRBs, etc). Conversely, I will focus on genuine supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs), which are the primary targets of ongoing and forthcoming pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). The high masses and the relatively low redshift of such sources would favor the identification of EM counterparts related to such events. I will discuss prospects for revealing SMBHBs with PTAs, the nature of putative associated EM counterparts, and possible strategies for GW and EM detection.
