« The rational for dark matter nuggets »

Ludovic Van Waerbeke
Physics and Astronomy Department, The University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada)

In 1984, E. Witten proposed a radical new approach for dark matter, that it could be made of massive objects (g-kg-ton mass with nuclear density). This idea was forgotten quickly because of some issues with the specific model (strangelets) he was advocating. However, the basic concept of nugget dark matter was never ruled out, and with the WIMPs paradigm now being in great difficulties, dark matter nuggets is, more than ever, a valid option to consider seriously. I will review the generic properties of dark matter nugget models and discuss some promising directions of the axion quark nuggets (AQN) model which I'm working on with my UBC colleague A. Zhitnitsky who invented it.
