« Fast radio bursts as probes of cosmic reionization  »

I will talk about Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs), extra-galactic radio transients which are now used as novel cosmological probes. They have only been discovered somewhat recently and there still remain many mysteries concerning the nature of FRBs and the mechanism producing them.
I give an overview of what we know so far about FRBs, their origin and properties, and how FRBs are used as cosmological probes. In particular I show how the dispersion of FRBs can be used to probe cosmic distances and reionization and how such constraints can be derived model-independently, i.e. without assuming any particular shape or model of the reionization history. For example, with a future detection of 100 FRBs at redshift z>5 we could constrain reionization and the CMB optical depth at a precision exceeding current state of the art quasar and Planck constraints.
