« Formation and optical properties of photochemical hazes in exoplanet atmospheres : insights from laboratory experiments »

Past observations by the Hubble Space Telescope revealed that atmospheric aerosols are ubiquitous in exoplanet atmospheres. A large sample of super-Earths and sub-neptunes with equilibrium temperatures below 1000 K have been discovered and selected for atmospheric characterization in the cycles 1 and 2 of JWST. Photochemical hazes are expected in these atmospheres with relatively low temperatures allowing the presence of methane in large abundances. First observations of GJ 1214b suggest the presence of such hazes. The interpretation of these observations rely on our knowledge on haze formation, micro-physics and optical properties. During this talk, I will describe how we measure the refractive indices using laboratory analogs of these hazes. I will quicky show you how laboratory experiments can provide crucial insights into the gas precursors of haze formation which is essential to develop micro-physics models.
