M dwarfs are obvious targets for the search of exoplanets in the habitable zone of their host stars. Their characterization is a challenge, however, because of their intrinsic faintness and the complexity of their atmospheres. M dwarfs also host magnetic fields that can impacting stellar characterization and be at the origin of radial velocity jitters. In this talk, I present the result of efforts aimed at accurately characterizing M dwarfs from high-resolution nIR spectra. We rely on spectra recorded with SPIRou in the context of the SPIRou Legacy Survey (SLS) and on synthetic spectra computed with our new tool, ZeeTurbo, to constrain atmospheric parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity) and the small-scale magnetic fields of strongly and weakly-active targets.
