« MICROSCOPE (2?) and the search for a fifth-force »

Hugo Lévy
Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris (Paris, France)

The recent MICROSCOPE space mission has allowed for an unprecedented precision on the test of the weak equivalence principle: a postulate that is central to Einstein's theory of General Relativity. This in-orbit experiment consisted in comparing the free fall of several test masses by means of ultra-sensitive accelerometers. Beyond testing the foundation of GR, MICROSCOPE can be used for probing various modified gravity models, some of which predict the existence of a putative fifth-force. Do we have a chance to detect it with space-based experiments?

In this talk, I will guide you through the epic of MICROSCOPE, from the principle of the experiment to its main results. In the second half of the presentation, I will focus on a specific class of modified gravity models and discuss some numerical studies conducted in satellite-reachable locations of the solar system.
May the force be with you next Friday!
