« The gravitational waves of compact binary systems »

Quentin Henry
Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris (Paris, France)

In this YmCa I will try to do a brief but broad overview of the gravitational waves (GW) topic. In particular, I will explain how we detect GW, what has been observed so far and the consequences of the observations. I will emphasize especially the consequences of the binary neutron star merger event: GW170817. Then I will try to give some insights on the linearized theory, meaning how good old Einstein predicted the existence of GW. It will allow me to introduce the post-newtonian formalism in a general way.

If I have time left, I will talk about the computation I have done on the finite size effects of compact objects. Indeed, taking into account finite size effects (meaning tidal interactions) changes slightly the movement of the bodies and consequently their gravitational radiation. Although tidal effects arise at a high post-newtonian order (5PN), they are detectable and can constrain the models of equation of state inside neutron stars.
