The discovery of unexpectedly numerous and luminous galaxies at z > 8 with JWST has challenged our models of early galaxy formation. Understanding whether this excess reflects enhanced star formation efficiency, bursty star formation histories, or AGN contribution requires large, statistical samples with well-controlled photometric redshifts. COSMOS-Web, the largest JWST Cycle 1 program covering ~0.54 deg^2, is uniquely suited to this task.
I will present our latest results on the UV luminosity function from z ~ 6 to z ~ 12, the properties of these early galaxies, and our spectroscopic follow-up efforts. To interpret the role of environment in this context, I will compare these observations with simulations and explore a possible connection between bright galaxies, early overdensities, and accelerated reionization. I will close by connecting these systems to their likely massive descendants at z ~ 3.5, where preliminary MUSE observations could reveal diffuse Lyman-alpha emission tracing intergalactic gas that may be actively feeding their exceptional growth.
