« SPHerIC: z~2 galaxy proto-clusters discovered with Planck, Herschel and Spitzer » |
Clément Martinache |
Over the past few decades, it has become clear cluster galaxies exhibit different properties than their field counterparts. However, observations of local clusters do not reveal much about their formation histories apart from the fact that cluster galaxies must have formed their stars in short, intense bursts of star-formation at z~3-5. Understanding how and when the environmental effects start to play an important role requires in-situ observations of their progenitors (in proto-clusters) at the time of their major phase of mass assembly. However, a large sample of well characterized proto-clusters at these epochs is needed to achieve this goal, and to this date only a handful are known, although large sample of candidates exists.
Here I will present a sample of proto-clusters candidates constructed by directly targeting the most intensely star-forming objects at redshifts z~2-3. These candidates are selected as the brightest FIR emitters over the whole-sky with the Planck satellite, and followed-up by Herschel and Spitzer. This sample, dubbed SPHerIC, has a unique selection bias, making it complementary to other proto-cluster searches, and with potential to unveil the most extremely star-forming structures in the found Universe. |
