The PhD

The doctorate corresponds to the third cycle of university studies. Undertaken after obtaining a master's degree and doctoral funding, it is prepared in three years within a Doctoral School which brings together laboratories likely to welcome doctoral students: the Ecole Doctorale d'Astronomie et Astrophysique d'Ile de France (ED 127) and the Ecole Doctorale de Physique en Ile de France (ED 564 PIF) for doctorates prepared at the IAP.

Original research work, supervised by a thesis director (or even two co-directors) in the laboratory where the thesis is carried out, constitutes the main part of the activity of future doctors. The main thesis director must have the French Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches, and the doctoral student must be registered in the Doctoral School to which the director is attached. The thesis work leads to a defense, during which the results are presented to a jury with the goal to obtain the degree of doctor. The defense is conditional on obtaining authorization, issued by the university in view of the reports on the thesis written by two members of the jury.

Additional training is provided by the associated Doctoral School during the three years of the thesis (Post-master academic training from the “Astronomy and Astrophysics of Ile-de-France” Doctoral School). Some doctoral students also have the possibility of carrying out a doctoral mission (generally a teaching mission in the university of registration).

The thesis constitutes a first professional experience leading to obtaining a post-doctoral contract or a job (branches in astronomy). The professional development of doctoral students is monitored by the Doctoral Schools.
